birds
lil_britches2003 asked:

This year is my first year at attempting strawberries. I wasn’t sure how easy or hard it would be. Not knowing, I only planted three plants and I put them in a planter. In three short weeks, my plants have tripled in size and I’ve gotten strawberries. However, before they have a chance to completely ripen, the birds are eating them before I get to even sample them. How do I keep the birds away?

Cover them with Remay or netting.

what i can recommend that would help keep them off your strawberry plants is put a bird house nearby but not too close to the plaants…..put some bird feed inside of there. or you can also get some chicken wire or a giants metal screen and wrap it around your strawberry plant and remove and replace it whenever your ready to harvest.

my mum and my grannie **** having nets and such things around their crops so what they do is they put a stick in the ground, not too high, and tie some ribbons and stuff that would flutter in the wind. They say it scares the birds away better than a scarecrow, I haven’t tried it on my tomatoes yet but the elderly are wise so I believe them..!

Put bird netting over the planter. Sometimes a fake snake or model owl in or near the planter will keep them away.

If you have some old CDs that you don’t mind sacrificing, put a framework around the planter and dangle the CDs on strings over it. The twirling, flashing CDs will confuse the birds. This works for gardening in general - twirly flashy things drive birds away. You know all those tacky little windmill things people put in their flowerbeds? Those were originally developed to keep birds off.

A bowl of red kool-aid has been known to lure them into trying what looks like a giant strawberry. Instead of the real ones.
