How do I keep birds and bugs from eating the cherries off of my cherry tree?
chicapoloca asked:
I have a mulberry bush right next to it that produces fruit at the same time but the cherry tree still gets attacked I don’t have a pesticide license and don’t even know what I would need. Is there anything natural I can get to help? Right now the cherries are green and the birds have already started at it. I just want enough cherries to bake a pie or two this summer.

Witch Hazel. I learned that from the Gardening Guy on Saturdays at 12 noon.
by a pellet gun . no seriously put out a scare crow the birds will stay away
You could put bitter tasting things such as onions or garlic in a blender an spray it around the tree.
log on to Gurney.com. They sell mail order nets that you can drape over your trees and the pests will not be able to get to your fruit.
try using neem leaves boiled in water for 10 minutes. spray this water on the tree regularly and watch for the results.
If the tree is small enough, cover it w/plastic netting. That’s what we do. You can try hanging out foil pie plates or buy plastic owls to hang in the tree to scare them. My neighbors do that with larger trees. They must work because I see them use them every year.
Okay, birds first.
You can try hanging aluminum pie tins from the branches. If the tree is very big, you won’t be able to get to the top. This may elp deter them, but probably won’t stop them completely. You can also try scarecrows, but probably won’t work either. The only effective way to keep birds out is a netting over the whole tree.
Now the bugs
You will need to use an insecticide designed for use on crops. Sevin is a good all around choice. Use the liquid so that you can spray it over the whole tree. If you have a hose end sprayer, you can use that and put the sevin in the dispenser. Otherwise, you will mix and put in a pressure sprayer. You don’t need a license for sevin if you are in the US. You can try some of the alternatives, but no guarantees. Tobacco tea - boil some tobacco in water to make a strong solution and then dilute with water to spray. Add a couple teaspoons of dish detergent to help it adhere to the plant and break down the bug’s protection. Or cayenne pepper spray - water and cayenne pepper mixed and sprayed.
